For my creative exercise I’ve chosen to compile a web article in the form of a short essay that relates to the concept of memory. I’ve used a combination of text, still images and video clips to address the issue of nostalgia associated with the main theme of the article – evolution of pixel graphics as a technology and an art form. The article “The pixel art nostalgia” looks at the emergence and development of pixel graphics, it’s adoption by various industries and media and nostalgic return and artistic reappropriation of pixel technology decades later.
The concept of memory addresed in the article in the way that it overviews the historic aspects of the pixel graphics, and aknowledges the social and cultural impact of the technology, and the creative outcome that was born out of the technology due to it’s once strong influence on the society. Thus, the artical plays into the concept of nostalgia and explores various nostalgic aspects of the pixel art. The concept of nostagia refers to an emotional state varying from plasurable emotion to sorrow triggered by a reminder of a certain period in time in the past. The past is often represented in an ideolised form, as “good old times.” One’s childhood experience also plays a significant part of nostalgic remembrance at it represents personal and collective memory. With that in mind, I produced the blog article, which, by visual and textual means illustrates the way pixel graphics occupied a significant time in history, and therefore, had a strong cultural effect on people. It provides an insight into today’s use of old technology for acheiving nostalgic “retro” quality of the modern artwork. Also it exaplifies the shifting textual boundaries of the modern pixel art and the way it is currently being adopted by various previously unrelated media, ranging from web design to street paintings and tatoo art, as an ode to a timelesness of the prominent technological era.
